Roblox has agreed to pay over $12 million and improve platform safety features for its young users as part of a settlement with the state of Nevada.
The popular gaming platform, which has hundreds of millions of users, has faced significant litigation in recent months over claims that it failed to protect children from exploitation and other serious issues.
The settlement, announced on Wednesday, was reached before Nevada formally filed a lawsuit. As part of the agreement, Roblox will enhance safety features designed to keep its youngest users safe. Earlier this week, the company announced that it will roll out age-based accounts that limit mature content and communication features for young children later this year.
In addition to safety changes, the Associated Press reported that Roblox will also give $10 million over multiple years to support nondigital programs and activities like the Boys and Girls Club.
The platform will also fund an online safety campaign and a law enforcement liaison position to respond to Roblox safety concerns.
Changes Come as Roblox Child Safety Lawsuits Mount
Roblox is currently in the midst of battling dozens of lawsuits claiming that the platform failed to protect its youngest users from child predators. In April, nearly 150 Roblox lawsuits were active in federal court.
“For years, Roblox has served as the online platform of choice for predators seeking to find, groom, abuse, and exploit children,” one lawsuit states. “Roblox provides predators with easy access to tens of millions of children and allows these predators to freely move between inappropriate content and popular games to identify and target vulnerable young users.”
The platform is also facing legal actions from state and local governments. Florida, Texas, Kentucky and several other states have filed lawsuits against Roblox in recent months over these claims. In February, Los Angeles filed a lawsuit against the platform, claiming that Roblox enabled grooming and exploitation.
A federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) was created for Roblox lawsuits in December. This action is taken when many similar lawsuits are filed in federal court, consolidating them before one judge for coordinated proceedings.
More lawsuits are expected to be filed in the coming months as the litigation grows.
