A lawsuit over claims that Uber failed to protect a passenger from sexual assault has been settled just before the trial was set to begin. The rideshare giant agreed to resolve the case this week, evading what would have been the fourth lawsuit to go before a jury over similar claims.

Uber is in the midst of battling thousands of lawsuits brought by people who say they were sexually assaulted by drivers. Those cases argue that Uber prioritized profits over safety, failing to implement proper measures and background checks that could have helped keep passengers safe.

More trials are expected to take place.

Uber Hit With Multiple Verdicts Over Sexual Assault Claims

So far, three Uber sexual assault lawsuits have advanced to trial. Uber won the first case, which took place in California state court.

But plaintiffs have won the two federal trials held since. In February 2026, the company was ordered to pay $8.5 million to a woman who said that she was raped by her driver.

A couple of months later, Uber was hit with a $5,000 verdict in a case involving a woman who said her driver grabbed her thigh and made inappropriate comments.

So far, the company has not agreed to a global settlement to cover the wider litigation, but according to Bloomberg, the judge overseeing those lawsuits has pushed Uber to consider resolving these cases.

As of October 2026, nearly 5,000 lawsuits were active in federal court.
