Roblox has reached settlements with multiple U.S. states over claims that the popular platform failed to protect children.

Alabama announced on Tuesday that it had agreed to a $12.2 million settlement with the gaming giant over lapses in child safety standards.

That money will go toward funding school resource officers across the state.

“Alabama stepped in where others failed to act,” Attorney General Steve Marshall said in a statement. “This settlement sends a clear message to every platform operating in this space—you cannot turn a blind eye to the exploitation of children and expect to avoid consequences.”

West Virginia announced a similar settlement worth $11 million with the platform. Some of those funds will go toward public safety campaigns.

As part of the settlements, Roblox also agreed to have its users undergo age verification to ensure that different age groups have access to appropriate content.

Earlier this year, the gaming platform announced it would use an AI-powered facial recognition tool to estimate users’ ages.

Roblox agreed to a similar settlement with the state of Nevada last week, including commitments to fund nondigital programs like the Boys and Girls Club.

Online platforms have a responsibility to protect children. If your child was harmed after connecting with an adult on Roblox, you may be able to take legal action.

Roblox Facing Growing Claims of Child Exploitation

Roblox has faced a number of lawsuits in recent years, both from states and individuals, over claims that the platform failed to protect its young users.

Lawsuits argue that predators use the platform to get in touch with and gain the trust of children, and that Roblox didn’t do enough to prevent these concerns.

There are nearly 150 Roblox exploitation and assault lawsuits filed by families and individuals currently pending in federal court. Multiple states have also filed lawsuits.
